Prognosis and NT-proBNP in heart failure patients with preserved vs reduced ejection fraction
Heart Jun 15, 2019
Salah K, et al. - Researchers performed comparisons between patients hospitalised for acute decompensated heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF) vs heart failure with reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF), for the prognostic value of absolute and percentage change in N-terminal pro-B-type natriuretic peptide (NT-proBNP) levels. They defined 283 patients with left ventricular ejection fraction ≥50% as HFpEF, and those with <40% as HFrEF (n=776). In this study, the relative risk information conferred by NT-proBNP levels was same in HFpEF as in HFrEF, and thereafter, a possibility was highlighted that a relatively greater contribution of comorbidities to prognosis may be seen in patients with HFpEF with lower NT-proBNP levels as compared with patients with HFrEF.
