Prevalence of overweight among youth with chronic conditions in the United States: An update from the 2016 National Survey of Children's Health
Pediatric Obesity Jan 08, 2020
Haegele JA, et al. - Utilizing the 2016 National Survey of Children's Health (NSCH) data, researchers sought to present current estimates of the prevalence of overweight among US youth with common chronic conditions. Further, they investigated parental concern about weight status among youth with chronic conditions who were overweight. The 2016 NSCH yielded data of 10,997 children (aged 10 to 17 years) with and 13,408 children without chronic conditions. Overall, youth with chronic conditions vs without chronic conditions had a significantly higher likelihood of being overweight (35.4% vs 27.8%). The prevalence of overweight was most apparent among youth with diabetes (56.4%), intellectual disabilities (53.6%) and hearing impairments (46.1%). Child's weight concerned parents of overweight youth with chronic conditions significantly higher than those without chronic conditions. This study thereby suggests youth with chronic conditions, especially those with certain conditions, in whom prioritization of funding, research, and intervention is needed.
