Prevalence of and risk factors for diabetic retinopathy and diabetic macular edema in patients with early and late onset diabetes mellitus
Ophthalmic Research May 04, 2020
Wang Y, Lin Z, Zhai G, et al. - In patients with early onset diabetes (EOD, ≤ 40 years) and late onset diabetes (LOD, > 40 years), researchers contrasted the prevalence of diabetic retinopathy (DR) and diabetic macular edema (DME), as well as their risk factors. Patients were enrolled from a community-based study, Fushun Diabetic Retinopathy Cohort Study (FS-DIRECT), conducted in China between July 2012 and May 2013. The sample consisted of 1,932 patients with gradable fundus photography. In this sample of T2D patients, both the incidence of DR and DME tended to be higher in patients with diabetes ≤ 40 years of age than those who later developed it.
