Prevalence and predictors of atrial arrhythmias in patients with sinus node dysfunction and atrial pacing
Journal of Interventional Cardiac Electrophysiology Oct 11, 2018
Bukari A, et al. - Researchers examined the incidence, prevalence, and predictors of atrial arrhythmias (AAs) in patients who had a pacemaker implanted for symptomatic sinus node dysfunction (SND). They also investigated the impact of atrial pacing (AP) on AAs. They examined all consecutive patients who had pacemaker implantation from 2005 to 2011. Findings demonstrated a high prevalence of AAs in SND, this was particularly evident in white patients. In a minority of patients, they observed suppressed paroxysmal atrial fibrillation (AF) consequent to AP; however, AP had no influence on new-onset AF. The authors indicated the cruciality of ensuring close surveillance for early detection of AAs among patients with diabetes, hypertension, and dilated atria.
