Prevalence and prediction of obstructive sleep apnea prior to bariatric surgery--gender-specific performance of four sleep questionnaires
Obesity Surgery Apr 08, 2018
Horvath CM, et al. - In view of the recommendations for screening for obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) prior to bariatric surgery (BS) because of its association with the perioperative risk, researchers assessed the gender-specific performance of four sleep questionnaires (Epworth Sleepiness Scale (ESS), Fatigue Severity Scale (FSS), STOPBang, and NoSAS) to predict moderate to severe OSA in the morbidly obese population. They noted a gender-specific difference in the performance of the evaluated OSA screening questionnaires in obese patients scheduled for BS. Compared to ESS and FSS, STOPBang and NoSAS performed markedly better. All sleep questionnaires, with the exception of the ESS, allowed better OSA prediction in women than in men.
