Prevalence and incidence of age-related macular degeneration in europe: a systematic review and meta-analysis
British Journal of Ophthalmology Mar 24, 2020
Li JQ, Welchowski T, Schmid M, et al. - A systematic review and meta-analysis were designed to evaluate the prevalence and incidence of age-related macular degeneration in Europe. Researchers conducted meta-analysis and meta-regression on time-trends, age, countries, regions, gender and classification systems for AMD. This study enrolled a total of 22 prevalence and four incidence studies published since 1996. Any age-related macular degeneration currently affected approximately 67 million people in the EU and, due to population ageing, this number is expected to increase by 15% until 2050. It is indicated that monitoring and treatment of people with advanced disease stages will need further healthcare resources and thorough healthcare planning in the years and decades to come.
