BMC Geriatrics Oct 27, 2019
Yadav UN, et al. - Researchers examined the older population residing in rural communities in eastern Nepal, to know about the prevalence as well as determinants of frailty in the absence of disability in this group of people in this cross-sectional analytical study. Overall 794 older adults aged ≥ 60 residing in the rural part of Sunsari and Morang district of eastern Nepal were included. Findings revealed a high prevalence of frailty in the absence of disability in this study sample. Significantly related to frailty were participants from underprivileged ethnic groups, lack of daily physical exercise, presence of depressive symptoms and those not getting enough social support from family, as revealed in the adjusted models. Findings call for frailty awareness (both for clinicians and general public) in order to prevent negative outcomes. To decrease the healthcare burden early screening frailty in primary care has the potentials to avoid implications of frailty in Nepal.
