American Journal of Ophthalmology Oct 16, 2019
Bikbov MM, Zainullin RM, Gilmanshin TR, et al. - In this typical, ethnically mixed, urban and rural population from Russia, researchers evaluated the prevalence of age-related macular degeneration (AMD). The Ural Eye and Medical Study carried out in a rural and urban area in Bashkortostan/Russia involved 5,899 candidates aged 40+ years. On fundus photographs and optical coherence tomographic images of 4,932 candidates, AMD defined according to the Beckman Initiative for Macular Research was evaluated. For people aged > 55 years, the prevalence of any AMD, early AMD, intermediate AMD, late AMD, geographic atrophy and neovascular AMD were 18.2%, 11.6%, 5.0%, 1.6%, 0.7% and 0.9% respectively. According to this population-based prevalence assessment, a higher AMD prevalence was mainly linked to older age, rural region of habitation, shorter axial length and lower prevalence of diabetes mellitus. The prevalence of AMD was lower than in Europeans and higher than in East Asians.
