Presepsin values as markers of severity of sepsis
International Journal of Infectious Diseases Apr 08, 2020
Aliu-Bejta A, et al. - The diagnostic accuracy of presepsin, procalcitonin (PCT), and C-reactive protein (CRP) in differentiating sepsis severity, as well as their link with Sepsis-related Organ Failure Assessment (SOFA) score, was assessed. Researchers assessed 100 septic patients from two university clinical centers in the study during two time periods. Sepsis stratification was done using new Sepsis-3 definitions. Evaluation of biomarkers and SOFA score was done four times during the illness. Outcomes suggest presepsin as a new sepsis biomarker; it had a better diagnostic value for sepsis compared with PCT and CRP. Presepsin concentrations on admission are indicative of the severity of sepsis. Septic shock could not be discriminated from sepsis using procalcitonin. Strong correlation of presepsin with SOFA score was observed, as such it is the best among tested biomarkers, for describing multiple organ dysfunction/failure.
