Preparing for PrEP: Estimating the size of the population eligible for HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis among men who have sex with men in England
Sexually Transmitted Infections Apr 28, 2019
Mitchell HD, et al. – In this study, researchers evaluated the number of men who had sex with men (MSM) attending sexual health clinics (SHCs) who might be eligible for HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (HIV-PrEP) in England. From 2010 to 2015, the number of HIV-negative MSM attending SHCs with a HIV-negative test in the past year increased two-fold from 14,643 to 29,023, and HIV incidence in this group was 1.9 per 100 person-years. In addition, during the same period, there was an increase in the number of people with bacterial sexually transmitted infection diagnosis (past year; 4,365 to 10,276). In this subgroup, HIV incidence was 3.3 per 100 person-years in 2014. Overall, in 2015, ~10,000 HIV-negative MSM were considered to be potentially eligible for HIV-PrEP based on clinic history in GUMCAD.
