Preload reserve is restored in patients with decompensated chronic heart failure who respond to treatment

Congestive Heart Failure May 17, 2019

Squara P, et al. - Researchers focused on the link between preload reserve and treatment efficacy in chronic heart failure (CHF) with this prospective study enrolling 50 patients (aged 77±24 years) with decompensated CHF (B-type brain natriuretic peptide [BNP] >1,000 pg/mL). During a passive leg raise, alterations in contraction indices were noted to evaluate preload reserve. An overall reduction in heart rate, blood pressure, and cardiac power index, as well as an increase in all preload reserve indices, was evident in relation to the therapy. Findings revealed a good correlation between treatment effectiveness and changes in preload reserve. Overall, the preload reserve in patients with decompensated CHF was restored by effective treatment, as indexed by a reduction in BNP.
