Predictors of outcome in patients with severe sepsis or septic shock due to extended-spectrum β-lactamase-producing Enterobacteriaceae
International Journal of Antimicrobial Agents Jul 07, 2018
Russo A, et al. - Predictors of outcome were assessed in septic patients with bloodstream infection (BSI) caused by extended-spectrum β-lactamases (ESBL)-producing Enterobacteriaceae (E) via undertaking the INCREMENT project, the largest international cohort study on ESBL infections. BSI due to ESBL-E in patients who developed severe sepsis or septic shock was associated with high 30-day mortality. Important determinants of unfavorable outcome included comorbidities, severity scores, source of infection and need of antibiotic therapy escalation. Researchers recommend using carbapenems only in strains with resistance to β-lactam/β-lactamase inhibitors
