Predictors of condomless anal intercourse in young HIV-positive men who have sex with men with detectable viral loads
Journal of Adolescent Health Jan 30, 2020
Hightow-Weidman L, et al. - Among 146 young, gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men (YGBMSM), aged 16–24 years, with a detectable viremia recruited in a mobile health adherence intervention, researchers examined potential risk factors for condomless anal intercourse (CAI) and serodiscordant CAI (SD-CAI). A strong agreement was found between the Random Forests and regression methods. Marijuana use, problematic substance use, and being in a committed relationship are significant risk factors for CAI. High rates of CAI, including SD-CAI participation in a YGBMSM population with detectable viral loads, pose important concerns for onward transmission. In this priority population, individual, dyadic, and structural predictors of CAI have been associated with risk engagement. Tackling these factors in combination with ensuring viral suppression will be key to ending the youth epidemic.
