Predictors of a non-home discharge destination following spinal fusion for adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS)

Malik AT, et al. - In this retrospective cohort study, researchers quantified 8452 participants to study the risk factors correlated with a non-home discharge after spinal fusions in adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS). They noted that 90 cases were discharged to a destination other than home like skilled-care facility, separate acute care unit, and/or rehabilitation unit. An association of independent predictors like body mass index of 20 to 30, structural pulmonary abnormality, past history of childhood cancer, an ASA grade >II, undergoing a revision surgery vs a primary surgery, a length of stay >4 days, and the occurrence of a predischarge complication, with a non-home discharge disposition.
