Predictors for favorable cognitive outcome poststroke: A-seven-year follow-up study

Dementia and Geriatric Cognitive Disorders Sep 05, 2019

Hagberg G, Fure B, Thommessen B, et al. - In this investigation involving 208 patients, researchers assessed the prevalence of mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and dementia 7 years after a first-ever stroke or transient ischemic attack (TIA) to subclassify the impairments and identify predictors for a favorable cognitive outcome. Patients with first-ever stroke or TIA without preexisting CI were included during 2007 and 2008. Over the follow-up period, 80 patients died, and 12 patients dropped out. A total of 109 completed follow-up, of whom 40 received a diagnosis of MCI and 24 with dementia after 7 years. According to findings, 60% of survivors of strokes have a positive cognitive result. Favorable outcome was linked to lower age and lower medial temporal lobe atrophy grade on MRI.
