Predictors for blood loss in pediatric patients : A retrospective study
BMC Musculoskeletal Disorders Jun 28, 2019
Ma L, et al. - Via a retrospective study of 103 pediatric patients, who were younger than 10 years old with diagnosed congenital scoliosis and hemivertebra (a common cause for congenital scoliosis) and who underwent primary posterior hemivertebra resection, the researchers intended to investigate the risk factors of blood loss in such patients. One hundred and forty-six plus 178 ml was the mean total blood loss. The percentage of total blood loss to the estimated blood volume was recognized as 27.0 + 13.3%. Independent risk factors of total blood loss were preoperative total Cobb angle and the number of fused levels. No correlation of preoperative platelet count and preoperative coagulation function with blood loss in patients who underwent hemivertebra resection was observed. Hence, the blood loss for patients who underwent hemivertebra resection was determined by the preoperative total Cobb angle and the number of fused levels. In order to ascertain the role of blood management in reducing blood loss and transfusion in patients undergoing hemivertebra resection, further studies are necessary.
