Predictors and outcome of conversion to cardiac surgery during transcatheter aortic valve implantation
European Journal of Cardio-Thoracic Surgery Mar 09, 2018
Arsalan M, et al. - The predictors and outcome of conversion to cardiac surgery during transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI) were determined. Conversion to sternotomy during TAVI was observed in 2% of cases, with annular rupture, device embolization, and pericardial tamponade being the most common causes. The complications requiring conversion were unpredictable; however, in view of these life-threatening complications, the 30-day survival rate exceeding 50% underscored the significance of an experienced and well-attuned heart team providing immediate access to surgical bailout procedures.
