Predictive performance of PlGF (placental growth factor) for screening preeclampsia in asymptomatic women: A systematic review and meta-analysis
Hypertension Sep 25, 2019
Agrawal S, et al. - By analyzing 40 studies involving 3,189 cases of preeclampsia and 89,498 controls, researchers evaluated the predictive accuracy of PlGF (placental growth factor) for screening preeclampsia in asymptomatic women. The overall predictive odds ratio of the test was estimated to be 9 (6–13). In subgroup analysis assessing many PlGF thresholds, they found that PlGF levels between 80 and 120 pg/mL showed the highest predictive values, with a high predictive odds ratio of 25 (7–88), a sensitivity and specificity of 0.78 and 0.88, respectively, and a positive likelihood ratio and a negative likelihood ratio of 6.3 and 0.26, respectively. Additionally, higher accuracy was shown in relation to performing the test following 14 weeks of gestation and performing the test for prediction of early-onset preeclampsia. Overall, the utility of PlGF as a screening instrument to predict preeclampsia was shown in this study. Nonetheless, caution is recommended while judging its utility.
