Predictive factors of postoperative dysphagia in single-level anterior cervical discectomy and fusion
Spine Mar 26, 2019
Vaishnav AS, et al. - In single-level anterior cervical discectomy and fusion (ACDF), researchers examined whether zero profile devices offer an advantage over traditional plate/cage constructs for dysphagia rates. Dysphagia was preoperatively evaluated at 6 weeks and 12 weeks by swallowing quality of life (SWAL-QOL) scores. The study sample consisted of 64 patients, 41 received a zero profile device, and 23 received plate-graft construct. In single level ACDF, operative time and preoperative SWAL-QOL scores were predictive of dysphagia. According to this retrospective review of prospectively collected data, zero profile devices had a significantly shorter operative time and in this regard could provide an advantage in dysphagia rates.
