Prediction of brace effect in scoliotic patients: Blinded evaluation of a novel brace simulator—An observational cross-sectional study

European Spine Journal Mar 22, 2019

Courvoisier A, et al. - In this observational cross-sectional study, the authors examined the data to evaluate a novel brace simulator for scoliotic cases using a high-fidelity 3D "avatar" of the patient's trunk. They compared the in-brace Cobb angle effect (real effect) with the virtual numeric in-brace Cobb angle using the blindly constructed avatar (simulation effect). They compared real and simulated in-brace Cobb angle using a paired 2-sided Student's t-test. They significantly observed the real mean Cobb angle, 11° and 17° in the simulation. They also measured the strength of prediction of the simulation for each candidate. They recorded good and moderate prediction (± 10°) for 76% of the real in-brace Cobb angles.
