Prediction and prevention of sudden death in young patients (< 20 years) with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy
The American Journal of Cardiology May 17, 2020
Rowin EJ, Sridharan A, Madias C, et al. - In this study with 146 hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HC) patients < 20 years of age, researchers evaluated the accuracy of sudden death (SD) prediction and prevention with prophylactic ICDs. They depended on ≥ 1 established individual risk markers regarded as major within each patient's clinical profile, on the basis of an enhanced American College of Cardiology /American Heart Association guidelines algorithm. They reported that use of the individual risk marker algorithm yielded 100% sensitivity in predicting SD events and 63% specificity for detecting cases without events. Overall, findings revealed high reliability of an enhanced ACC/AHA risk stratification strategy, based on established individual risk markers, in prospectively predicting SD events among children and adolescents suffering from HC, as well as to avert most arrhythmia-based catastrophes in this susceptible high risk group.
