Pre-discharge prognostic factors of physical function among older adults with hip fracture surgery: A systematic review
Osteoporosis International Jan 18, 2019
Lim KK, et al. - Investigators assessed the data using the Quality in Prognosis Studies (QUIPS) tool to estimate pre-discharge prognostic factors of physical function among older individuals (age ≥50 years) with hip fracture surgery. They recognized 107 pre-discharge prognostic factors and divided them into the following 7 categories: physical, cognitive, demographic, psychosocial, socioeconomic, injury-related, and process of care. They recorded a total length of stay, physical function at discharge, and grip strength, potentially modifiable factors with strong/moderate evidence of an association. They also noted gender, fracture type, and time to surgery as factors with strong/moderate evidence of no association. Whereas, body-mass index, psychological resilience, depression, and anxiety were observed as factors with limited, conflicting, or inconclusive evidence. They suggested positive outcomes with these prognostic factors in identification of patients who might benefit from more intensive intervention or to advise them on their expectations on recovery.
