Potential HIV transmission risk among spouses: Marriage intention and expected extramarital male-to-male sex among single men who have sex with men in Hunan, China
Sexually Transmitted Infections Jun 12, 2019
Wu W, et al. – In this study, researchers assessed single Chinese men who have sex with men (MSM) to determine the intention to marry and the expected extramarital male-to-male sex, in order to estimate the potential HIV transmission risk among MSM living with HIV and their female spouses. In this web-based, cross-sectional survey, 556 single MSM in Hunan, China completed a questionnaire covering sociodemographic characteristics, sexual behaviors, HIV-related and homosexuality-related stigma, marriage intention, and expected extramarital sexual behaviors. The analysis revealed the intention to marry a woman in nearly half (48.9%) of MSM participants; of these, 91% reported an intention to practice homosexual behaviors after marriage. Chinese MSM displayed high sexual minority stress, which contributes to the HIV transmission risk between MSM living with HIV and their female spouses.
