Poststroke epilepsy in an ischemic stroke cohort- Incidence and diagnosis
Acta Neurologica Scandinavica Oct 09, 2019
Hassani M, et al. - In this retrospective single-center study involving 240 patients, researchers sought to analyze the adherence to the latest updated definition of epilepsy, as well as the occurrence and diagnosis of poststroke epilepsy (PSE) in an ischemic stroke-cohort admitted to Karolinska University Hospital in Stockholm during 2015 and registered in the Swedish Stroke Register. Medical records of the patient were scrutinized for the presence of poststroke seizures/epilepsy. According to findings, many patients with PSE had a correct diagnosis of epilepsy and were treated with antiepileptic medications. Nonetheless, this study suggests that adherence to the latest updated definition of epilepsy still has the potential for improvement. The frequency of PSE with revised descriptions of epilepsy in a Swedish ischemic stroke study is similar to previous research. Larger studies are required to confirm the PSE incidence findings.
