Postoperative delirium in individuals undergoing transcatheter aortic valve replacement: A systematic review and meta-analysis
Journal of the American Geriatrics Society Oct 12, 2018
Abawi M, et al. - Authors assessed the incidence of in-hospital postoperative delirium (IHPOD) following transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR). They conducted a literature search using PubMed, Embase, BioMedCentral, Google Scholar, and the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (up to December 2017) databases to identify and obtain relevant articles. Those with observational studies that reported on the incidence of IHPOD following TAVR, with a sample size of over 25, were included in the meta-analysis (n=31). The crude incidence of IHPOD after TAVR, with a pooled estimate rate of 8.1%, ranged from 0% to 44.6%; heterogeneity was high. After TF-TAVR, the pooled estimate rate of IHPOD was 7.2% and 21.4% after non-TF TAVR. Findings suggested that frequent occurrence of delirium following TAVR, and compared with transfemoral (TF) procedures, is common after non-TF procedures.
