Post-extubation dysphagia: Does timing of evaluation matter?
Dysphagia Jul 27, 2018
Marvin S, et al. - In this prospective cohort study, the researchers intended to determine whether dysphagia, as measured by aspiration and need for diet modification, declines over the first 24-h post-extubation via analyzing data of 49 patients who completed FEES at 2–4 h post-extubation and 24–26 h post-extubation. Results revealed that 69% of participants safely swallowed at least one texture without aspiration at 2–4 h post-extubation. They found that patients might be safe to begin a modified diet soon after extubation. It was noted that delaying evaluation until 24-h post-extubation might allow for a less restricted diet.
