Polypharmacy among headache patients: A cross-sectional study

Ferrari A, et al. - Patients with primary headaches were assessed to determine the prevalence, characteristics and risk factors of polypharmacy. Researchers also examined if episodic and chronic headache patients differed regarding these variables. They noted that patients with primary headaches, mainly young adults, are exposed to high polypharmacy, comparable to that of the elderly. In view of the increased risk of adverse reactions in association with increased numbers of drugs, they suggested frequently reviewing the many medications concomitantly taken by primary headache sufferers.
