Polyethylene wear with ceramic and metal femoral heads at 5 years: a randomized controlled trial with radiostereometric analysis
Journal of Arthroplasty Aug 09, 2020
Bergvinsson H, et al. - In this study, the initial creep deformation and follow wear pattern were compared applying radio stereometric analysis, of ceramic and metal femoral heads that articulate with a modern highly cross-linked polyethylene cup liner. Researchers randomized a total of 50 patients with primary osteoarthritis and scheduled for uncemented total hip arthroplasty in a 1:1 ratio to either a ceramic or a metal femoral head. This study's findings revealed that with the introduction of modern highly cross-linked polyethylene, the ceramic head demonstrates no superiority when it comes to either early deformation or polyethylene wear in comparison with the metal head.
