Plasma somatostatin in advanced heart failure: Association with cardiac filling pressures and outcome
Cardiology Oct 11, 2020
Deis T, Balling L, Rossing K, et al. - Since it is yet to be determined if somatostatin levels are related to central hemodynamic measurements in patients suffering from advanced heart failure (HF), therefore, researchers undertook this prospective analysis of HF patients (n = 53) showing a left ventricular ejection fraction <45% referred to right heart catheterization for assessment for heart transplantation or left ventricular assist device. Raised central venous pressure (CVP) and a decreased cardiac index (CI) was revealed in relation to log(somatostatin) in univariable regression analysis. Findings showed somatostatin levels were related to CVP and CI in patients with HF. A likely link of the pathophysiological mechanism with congestion and/or hypoperfusion of the intestine was suggested. In advanced HF, mortality was shown to be independently predicted by somatostatin.
