Pilot study for risk assessment of aspiration pneumonia based on oral bacteria levels and serum biomarkers
BMC Infectious Diseases Sep 06, 2019
Nishizawa T, Niikura Y, Akasaka K, et al. - Via performing this prospective study of aspiration pneumonia group, community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) group, and a control group (patients hospitalized for lung cancer chemotherapy), researchers sought to report on a convenient procedure that may assist in objectively evaluating the risk of aspiration pneumonia in the clinical setting. Relative to the CAP group and the control, the aspiration pneumonia group displayed significantly impaired oral health as assessed by the Oral Health Assessment Tool (OHAT) and had significantly higher oral bacterial count. Findings support the possible utility of OHAT and oral bacterial counts in determining the necessity of taking oral care and other preventive procedures in patients at high risk of aspiration pneumonia.
