Physical fitness and quality of life in adolescents with asthma and fixed airflow obstruction
Pediatric Pulmonology Nov 13, 2020
Sousa AW, Cabral ALB, Silva RA, et al. - Although reversible bronchoconstriction occurs in asthma, there are some individuals who develop fixed airflow obstruction (FAO). In this cross‐sectional study, adolescents with asthma and FAO were compared with adolescents with asthma without FAO with respect to their aerobic fitness, physical activity levels (PAL), muscle strength, and health‐related quality of life (HRQoL). The adolescents with asthma were divided into 2 groups: FAO and non‐FAO groups. Outcomes suggest no effect of FAO on aerobic fitness, PAL, peripheral muscle strength, or HRQoL in adolescents with asthma. In addition, physical deconditioning was noted in adolescents with asthma.
