Periprosthetic osseointegration fractures are infrequent and management is familiar
The Bone & Joint Journal Feb 09, 2020
Hoellwarth JS, Tetsworth K, Kendrew J, et al. - This study was undertaken to describe the risks and management of periprosthetic osseointegration fractures in amputees. Between 2010 and 2018, researchers designed a retrospective review distinguished 518 osseointegration procedures which were undertaken in 458 individuals for whom complete medical records were available. The multiple logistic regression was performed to evaluate potential risk factors including time since amputation, age at osseointegration, bone density, weight, uni/bilateral implantation, and gender. After press-fit osseointegration, the risks and sequelae of periprosthetic fracture for amputation should not deter individuals or clinicians from considering this procedure. Females and heavier individuals are likely to have an improved risk of fracture. Also, age, years since amputation, and bone density do not seem influential.
