Perioperative periprosthetic femur fractures are strongly correlated with fixation method: An analysis from the American Joint Replacement Registry
Journal of Arthroplasty Mar 14, 2019
Springer BD, et al. - Researchers examined the population to analyze the relationship of femoral stem fixation to perioperative periprosthetic femur fractures (PPFx) revision. They observed the occurrence of early PPFx requiring revision in 628 cases due to osteoarthritis (82.4%), femoral neck fracture (12.1%), and different causes (15.6%) with the higher prevalence of revisions in females. They found 58% of candidates with age more than ≥70 years, and 20% were ≥80 years of age. They noted 2.6 times more inclination to undergo early revision for PPFx among subjects with cementless stems than those with cemented fixation.
