Performance of prognostic risk scores in heart failure patients: Do sex differences exist?
Canadian Journal of Cardiology Dec 26, 2019
Vishram-Nielsen JKK, et al. - By undertaking this retrospective study, researchers assessed the performance of 2 commonly used prognostic risk scores, the Seattle Heart Failure Model (SHFM) and the Meta-Analysis Global Group in Chronic Heart Failure (MAGGIC) score, in foretelling death and a composite endpoint including ventricular assist device, heart transplantation, or mortality in women compared with men with heart failure (HF). Participants were 1,136 (25% women) consecutive ambulatory adult HF patients having reduced left ventricular ejection fraction (≤ 40%) observed at a single institution from 2000 to 2012. In both genders, the SHFM and the MAGGIC score displayed similar discriminatory capacity. In men and women, the predicted and observed 1-year mortality by the scores was not different. The application of the MAGGIC score in both genders is supported owing to better risk classification.
