Perceived stress as a risk factor of unemployment: A register-based cohort study
BMC Public Health Jun 19, 2018
Maehlisen MH, et al. - Researchers prospectively investigated the association between perceived stress quintiles and risk of unemployment. They also investigated the impact of socioeconomic status-groups on this association. Using Cohen’s Perceived Stress Scale, the level of perceived stress was assessed in 18–64-year-old employed respondents of a health survey (North Denmark Health Profile 2010). Ninety-eight weeks of follow-up was performed. Subgroups defined by education and income were further analyzed. They found the risk of subsequent unemployment in a working population nearly doubled by perceived everyday life stress. Socioeconomic status and perceived stress did not interact statistically significantly. Stress from everyday life should be focused on during stress prevention among the working population.
