Perceived health mediates effects of physical activity on quality of life in patients with a Fontan circulation
The American Journal of Cardiology Apr 15, 2019
Holbein CE, et al. - In this study including 177 Fontan patients (Mage=27.5 ± 7.6 years, 52% male), researchers assessed self-reported physical activity as well as its link to perceived health status and quality of life (QOL). As part of the cross-sectional Assessment of Patterns of Patient-Reported Outcomes in Adults with Congenital Heart disease – International Study (APPROACH-IS), these patients reported their physical activity, perceived health status, and QOL. Patients reported higher perceived general health and functional capacity with physical activity and therefore, regular physical activity could be beneficial for Fontan patients. Greater perceived health status may contribute to enhanced QOL. Based on these findings, the pivotal role of regular physical activity for Fontan patients was supported. The link between physical activity and QOL was mediated by perceived general health but not by NYHA functional class.
