Pay-it-forward strategy to enhance uptake of dual gonorrhea and chlamydia testing among men who have sex with men in China: A pragmatic, quasi-experimental study
The Lancet Infectious Diseases Dec 25, 2018
Li KT, et al. - In this pilot study, researchers evaluated a pay-it-forward strategy to increase uptake of gonorrhoea and chlamydia testing among men who have sex with men (MSM). At two HIV testing sites for MSM (an STD clinic for MSM and a local MSM community-based organisation) in Guangzhou, China, they implemented the pay-it-forward programme for 3 months, offering all men free gonorrhoea and chlamydia testing and giving the option of donating money toward testing for future participants. After this, both sites switched to the standard of care offering dual testing at the standard patient price of ¥150 (about US$21·50). This study included 408 men. Pay-it-forward was offered to 203 men, and standard of care was offered to 205 men. In the pay-it-forward group, 109 (54%) men, and in the standard-of-care group, 12 (6%) men received gonorrhoea and chlamydia testing. This suggests that for expanding integrated HIV testing services among MSM in China, pay-it-forward might be a sustainable model.
