Patient-reported outcomes of Achilles tendon repair using the modified gift-box technique with nonabsorbable suture loop: A consecutive case series
The Journal of Foot & Ankle Surgery May 17, 2019
Frantz TL, et al. - Researchers examined 60 consecutive patients (49 males, mean age 36.2 ± 9.9 years) who underwent Achilles tendon repair, using a modified gift-box suture loop technique, for the early range of motion, complication rates, and 1-year patient-reported outcomes. Observations revealed the overall rerupture rate of 1.7% (1 patient), the wound complication rate of 1.7% (1 patient), and the overall complication rate of 6.7% (4 patients). They identified no predictors of complications. At 1 year, the mean Achilles tendon rupture score (ATRS) of 81.8 ± 16.8 points was reported. By 1 year, a low rerupture and overall complication rates were noted. They reported improvement in the range of motion, particularly dorsiflexion, through at least 6 months. This technique led to lower 1-year ATRS among diabetic patients vs nondiabetic patients.
