Patient-reported outcomes and quality of life after treatment of choroidal melanoma: A comparison of enucleation vs radiotherapy in 1,596 patients
American Journal of Ophthalmology Mar 24, 2018
Damato B, et al. - The presumption that patients treated with radiotherapy for choroidal melanoma enjoy a better quality of life (QoL) than patients who have undergone enucleation was tested by the researchers. In patients who underwent primary enucleation for choroidal melanoma, patient-reported outcomes and QoL were found to be worse. Rather than enucleation itself, these outcomes could have been caused by factors predisposing to enucleation, as enucleated patients tended to be older, with a more advanced disease at presentation, and a worse prognosis for survival.
