Parental longevity and survival among patients with multiple myeloma and monoclonal gammopathy of undetermined significance: A population-based study
British Journal of Haematology Mar 29, 2019
Sverrisdóttir IS, et al. - Researchers determined how the survival of patients with multiple myeloma (MM) and monoclonal gammopathy of undetermined significance (MGUS) is influenced by parental longevity. Participants were patients with MM (n=4675), patients with MGUS (n=6812), and 13,398 population-based controls for MM as well as 19,110 controls for MGUS, recruited from 1988 to 2013. They defined longevity as >90 years of age. A decreased risk of death was reported in MM patients and in MGUS patients in relation to parental longevity. In both patient populations, a significantly reduced mortality risk was observed in relation to having one long-lived parent, but this was not of statistical significance when both parents exceeded 90 years of age. These findings could be indicative of a significant role of the host's genetic and environmental factors as far as survival is concerned.
