Outcomes of urgent vs nonurgent transcatheter aortic valve replacement
Catheterization and Cardiovascular Interventions Jul 16, 2020
Elbadawi A, Elgendy IY, Mentias A, et al. - Since there is a scarcity of data about the results of transcatheter valve replacement (TAVR) done in an urgent clinical setting, researchers compared patients who had TAVR in nonurgent vs urgent settings, applying propensity score matching. They identified hospitalizations for TAVR in the urgent setting, using the Nationwide Inpatient Sample database years 2011–2014. Per findings of this large nationwide analysis, nearly a quarter of TAVR procedures were done in the urgent settings. Although higher mortality and increased complications were reported in correlation with urgent TAVR vs nonurgent TAVR, but no remarkably higher absolute difference in in‐hospital death was evident. Therefore, urgent TAVR can be regarded as a reasonable strategy when indicated.
