Outcomes of primary rhegmatogenous retinal detachment repair among young adult patients
Acta Ophthalmologica Feb 09, 2021
Safadi K, et al. - Researchers conducted this retrospective, comparative case series study to assess the functional and anatomical outcomes of primary rhegmatogenous retinal detachment (RRD) repair in young adults. Ninety patients (90 eyes) aged between 18 and 40 years who underwent primary RRD surgical repair between 2006 and 2013 were included. According to the surgical technique used, patients were divided into three groups: scleral buckle (SB), pars plana vitrectomy (PPV) or combined surgery. The research emphasizes the effectiveness of SB in terms of anatomical and functional success as a primary treatment to repair retinal detachment in young adults. In addition, it is of great importance in this age group to preserve the lens as a result of using SB rather than PPV where possible.
