Outcomes of left ventricular assist device implantation in patients with uncommon etiology cardiomyopathy

The American Journal of Cardiology Feb 18, 2020

Galand V, Flécher E, Chabanne C, et al. - Since the influence of uncommon etiology cardiomyopathies on Left-ventricular assist device (LVAD)-recipient results is not adequately understood, researchers performed this observational analysis in 19 centers in order to define patients with uncommon cardiomyopathy etiologies and to assess the results between uncommon and ischemic/idiopathic dilated cardiomyopathy. This study included 652 LVAD-recipients, of those, 590 (90.5%) were categorized as ischemic/idiopathic and 62 (9.5%) were classified in the “uncommon etiologies” group. Main uncommon etiologies identified were: hypertrophic; cancer therapeutics–related cardiac dysfunction (CTRCD); myocarditis; valvulopathy and others. Significantly younger age, more females, and less co-morbidities were noted among patients with uncommon etiologies. Patients with uncommon cardiomyopathies vs ischemic/idiopathic group were less implanted as destination therapy. Overall, higher mortality rate was reported in LVAD-recipients with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, valvular heart disease and CTRCD.
