Outcomes of Asian-Americans implanted with left ventricular assist devices: An Interagency Registry for Mechanically Assisted Circulatory Support (INTERMACS) analysis
Heart, Lung, and Circulation Feb 27, 2020
Taleb I, Wever-Pinzon J, Wang W, et al. - Researchers determined if Asian-Americans on durable left ventricular assist devices (LVADs) display differential morbidity and mortality relative to Whites. They used the Interagency Registry for Mechanically Assisted Circulatory Support (INTERMACS) database and compared the results post-LVAD implantation of Asians vs Whites. Despite worse cardiac surgery outcomes shown in Asians in previous investigations, Asian-Americans studied in this INTERMACS analysis seemed to experience similar survival as well as the risk of adverse events as their White counterparts. Both in a univariate model and following adjustment for various clinical factors, a lower incidence of device malfunction was evident in the Asian-Americans.
