Outcomes of a routine invasive strategy in elderly patients with non-ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction from 2005 to 2014: Results from the PL-ACS registry

Coronary Artery Disease Jul 19, 2019

Piątek L, et al. - From the prospective, nationwide Polish Registry of Acute Coronary Syndromes, 68,978 elderly patients (≥75 years old) with non-ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (NSTEMI) were analyzed for trends in invasive procedures and outcomes among these patients. Multivariate analysis suggests age as one of the most significant factors related to a poorer outcome. The outcomes worsened with each increased decade of life – the relative risk of mortality was 1.63 for the in-hospital prognosis and 1.57 for the 12-month prognosis. The strongest factor associated with improved outcome was an invasive treatment strategy, with a relative risk of 0.31 for in-hospital mortality and 0.51 for 12-month mortality, respectively. Findings thus suggest considerable benefits of performing invasive procedures on patients with NSTEMI independent of age.
