Outbreaks of adenovirus-associated respiratory illness on five college campuses in the United States
Clinical Infectious Diseases Apr 29, 2020
Kujawski SA, Lu X, Schneider E, et al. - Human adenoviruses (HAdVs) outbreaks are well documented in congregate military training settings, but there are less data concerning outbreaks on college campuses. Given an increase in HAdV-associated respiratory illness during fall 2018 and spring 2019, in five US colleges, researchers sought to better ascertain HAdV epidemiology in this setting. From the five colleges, they identified 168 HAdV cases [Median age: 19 (range: 17–22) years; 102 cases (61%) male] during October 2018–December 2018 or March–May 2019. Observations revealed correlation of HAdV respiratory illness with substantial morbidity and missed class time among young, generally healthy adults on five US college campuses. These findings emphasize considering HAdVs as a cause of respiratory illness outbreaks in congregate settings such as college campuses.
