Osteoporosis is common and undertreated prior to total joint arthroplasty
Journal of Arthroplasty Apr 03, 2019
Bernatz J, et al. - A sum of 200 individuals were estimated to study preoperative osteoporosis screening rates with prevalence former to total joint arthroplasty (TJA) along with rates of pharmacologic osteoporosis therapy. Preoperative osteoporosis risk factors, prior dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry (DXA) testing, and prior osteoporosis pharmacotherapy were measured by them. They noted that 119 of 200 subjects met criteria for DXA testing. They reported DXA testing in 17.6% of subjects (119 cases) 2 years preceding surgery and observed 33% with osteoporosis by T-score. They recorded that 49 patients met NOF criteria for pharmacologic osteoporosis therapy whereas 11 of them was given a prescription for pharmacotherapy within 6 months prior or after surgery. They suggested the prevalence of periprosthetic fracture risk due to lack of preoperative osteoporosis screening and treatment.
