Optimizing the management of hypoglycaemia in individuals with type 2 diabetes: A randomized crossover comparison of a weight-based protocol compared with two fixed-dose glucose regimens
Diabetes, Obesity and Metabolism May 07, 2018
Krebs JD, et al. - This study investigated if an individualized body weight-based glucose treatment in adults with type 2 diabetes (T2DM) had a greater tendency to resolve hypoglycaemia with a single treatment without excessive rebound hyperglycaemia vs fixed doses of 12 or 30g of glucose. It was determined that a weight-based 0.3 g/kg treatment and a fixed 30g glucose treatment both led to higher blood glucose than a 12g treatment in T2DM. Furthermore, both treatments also increased the probability of resolution of hypoglycaemia after 10 minutes. The inference drawn was that both treatments caused an excess of mild rebound hyperglycaemia (>8 mmol/L) at 30 minutes.
