Journal of Orthopaedic Trauma Mar 27, 2019
Carter TH, et al. - In this study, authors estimated the risk factors for fixation failure, report patient outcomes and advise on alterations to the surgical technique for fibula nail stabilization of unstable ankle fractures among 342 candidates. They observed 20 failures (7 due to device failure and 13 due to surgeon error). They recorded secure fixation and good patient-reported outcomes for unstable ankle fractures with the fibula nail. They suggested the necessity of appropriate postoperative management and surgical technique (including careful placement of the PLS) to minimize construct failure risk.
