Opportunistic invasive fungal disease in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus from Southern China: clinical features and associated factors

Journal of Diabetes Investigation Nov 29, 2019

Lao M, et al. – Researchers performed a retrospective study in which they recorded demographic and clinical data to determine the clinical characteristics and associated factors for invasive fungal disease (IFD) in patients with type 2 diabetes (T2D). They assessed associated factors via logistic regression analysis. In all, they found that IFD is a life-threatening complication in patients with T2D, and Candida albicans, Cryptococcus neoformans, and Aspergillus fumigatus were identified as leading agents for infection. They also concluded that prolonged hyperglycemia may result in poor outcomes, but correction of anemia and hypoalbuminemia might improve prognosis.
